To reduce contemporary reliance on politicized memories of the old days and to provide a benchmark for gauging change, we sought a North China plain area that social scientists had studied before 1949. The Chinese authorities suggested Raoyang county, which had been the southeastern tip of Dingxian prefecture in central Hebei province.
