Speedboards would provide drivers immediate notification of their speed as they pass the device.

Union Pacific has taken down Southern Pacific speedboards and replaced them with U.P. speedboards. U.P. speedboards for reduction of speed are posted at a measly 2,500 feet from the point of effect.

The panel also keeps the driver informed of current speed limits and target speed limits at speedboards and signals ahead.

"We tend to get a bad rap because we are associated with the punk, vandal stereotype given to skateboarders," Pennell said. "The speedboard world is made up of people who love the sport too much to risk its reputation."
