The idea of travelling through the universe astrally has intrigued me, as well as others, for some time. The Cluster series of novels by Piers Anthony and Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon are examples of astral travelling. Do Tibetan monks travel astrally? At least for a decade or more, I have been pondering about the fragility of the human body for deep space travel. Would transhumanism at least be necessary, the technological augmentation of the human body and mind? Or, would wholly mechanical entities with artificial general intelligence, or even uploaded human minds, do the job?
The masculine amongst us like to wonder about the future, as the feminine tend to ponder about the past. Artificial Intelligence is indeed a big "wildcard" to consider. Will humans coexist with intelligent machines? Will AI be our servant? Or, will we humans be their slaves? Will we be like cats and dogs beside intelligent machines? Will AI tolerate us? At least I can conjecture: Maybe dangerous missions like space travel will be done by AI. Will the human body be too fragile for outer space? Will "transhumanism" transform us into stronger beings, with cybernetic and bioengineered parts? These kinds of things are the stuff of science fiction stories today, but tomorrow they may be reality…
My T-shirt says "¡Las estrellas son Australias!" (The stars are Australias). The motto alludes to my idea that outer space is full of potential human colonies on moons, planets, and other celestial bodies—the future space exploration and colonization. I compare the potential future to the savage wilds of bygone Australia or the Old Wild West of the Americas. Granted that the human body might be too fragile for deep space, future technologies could help—extended life, transhumanism, AI, etc.
It's the 18th of May of 2025. Even though there's still much of Minda's delicious macaroni in the fridge, after 17:00, I went out to Tim Hortons café to enjoy an Iced Classic Lemonade and a Turkey Bacon Club Artisan Sandwich. The sun rays bathed the hall. I was thinking that even with higher nonhuman intelligence in the plausible future, humans could still evolve in tandem, like cats and dogs with their masters. Transhumanism might become a prevalent reality.
Those who favor transhumanism speak the language of individual choice and freedom from institutional authoritarianism; those who challenge it speak the language of human dignity and human nature as embodied in the individual.
