In a study reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine, researchers describe how a synthetic drug, called antisense oligonucleotide, reduced the production and in some cases cleared clumps of tau in the brain.

Michael Longaker, a professor of surgery and co-director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Stanford, helped make the discovery and co-authored a study on the topic, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The Director of the Preclinical and Translational Cancer Research Program at the American Cancer Society said the study is exciting because it shows efficacy with humans.
