PBA has been shown to specifically disrupt or prevent borate dependent crosslinks that are important for the structural integrity of the cell, including the organization of transvacuolar cytoplasmic strands of tobacco cells, making it a useful tool for rapidly and reversibly inducing boron deficiency-like responses.
