Unelating

It was certainly unelating as an architectural composition; but then we know, by the story, that the plain pear is often the most luscious.

But there is something unthrilling, unelating, passionless about Black and Blue: a good many commendable details, a great deal of savoir-faire (it comes to us from Paris, after all), but not much heart.
