They then measured the growth responses and carbohydrate contents of the remaining leaves, shoots, and berries and compared those of the "munched" plants with those of the "unmunched" plants and the “deflowered plants,” which didn't produce berries, with the plants whose flowers were intact, which did produce a crop of berries.
