By 3 o'clock A. M., Mrs. Chadwick had an excellent breakfast ready of stewed sheldrake, clam fritters, excellent buckwheat cakes, and good coffee, and shortly after, with lighted lanterns and a good lunch packed in a tin blicky, we were off to our various points, when only a faint gray streak showed the approach of daylight in the east.
