The venous drainage of the ventral oral region (e.g., tongue) is to the tracheal vein (S1 File : Views of Figs 9, 10 and 11 ), bypassing the head and draining into the heart, although a small anastomosis with the lateral head vein, via the buccomandibular vein [1 ], does occur at the level of the jugular constrictor muscle.
