When i was a kid, i used to stand by myself at the bus stop instead of with the other kids (mainly because i'm an introvert, and introverts are usually targets for the malice of other kids). I was amazed one day when someone told me that all the kids thought i was stuck up because i didn't interact with them. I was feeling sort of left out and outcastish, and then i find out they think i'm leaving *them* out or something. I suppose there's no way to really communicate that saying "i'm different than 99% of people in fundamental ways" is not the same as saying "i'm special and better than 99% of people", so i won't try. But you might be able to convince yourself of that.
