Our study uncovered age-dependent decline in phosphometabolite turnover rates and dynamic energetic rearrangements in aging rat atria with simultaneous phosphotransfer circuit and mitochondrial substrate shuttle deficits hindering ATP cycling that may underlie the vulnerability of the whole energetic system, muscle weakness and electrical instability.
