Wutai

Born in Wu T'ai county, Shansi, in 1902, in a landlord family, Hsu was educated at a normal school; in 1924 he entered Whampoa Academy.

Wutai county has already re-forested a million mou of hillside, and has plans for a further 800,000 mou to be tackled in the immediate future. But there is a long way to go yet before the whole of Wutai is anything like what it was when the huge trees that were cut to make the pillars and beams of temples like Fu Kwang Ssu were still standing.

Their greatest discovery came on an expedition in 1937 when they dated and meticulously catalogued Foguang Si, or the Temple of Buddha’s Light, in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was built in 857 A.D., making it the oldest building known in China at the time. (It is now the fourth-oldest known).

One of the model villages under this program is in the Wutai area of Pingtung county in southern Taiwan, where people have been moved from Haucha, a remote and inaccessible area where they lived in caves and huts.
