In the night of the 9th of November of 2021, as I entered the cafe to get my iced green tea, a hunky man sat at a table, as he fiddled with his laptop. As I sat at a table by the window, Michael the Guǎngzhōu Man entered and ordered his coffee. We sat together talking. He said that he was flying off tomorrow to visit China for six months. We talked about Thailand, a favourite topic. The food is excellent there. Thai and Vietnamese women have nice personalities, I emphasized. On parting, he gave me a cup of instant noodles. On my way home, I saw Rod my white neighbour. He said that he just retired from his water recycling job. He needs a hobby, we both agreed. I emphasized that the Web has many hobby opportunities.
Michael the Guǎngzhōu Man and I were discussing clothing of different ethnic groups. We both noticed that Chinese wear modern Western clothes, generally. He mentioned the long dress that Vietnamese women still wear—the "áo dài" as it is called. East Indians steadfastly wear their saris and robes. I said that I detest the Western business suit attire with the choking tie.

This morning of the 14th of June of 2025, here on Lulu Island, is quite cloudy and chilly for a near-summer morning. I walked to Tim Hortons café at about 5 o'clock. There, I enjoyed an iced coffee with oat milk and scrambled eggs with sausage bits and potatoes. Yesterday was probably my 42nd visit this year to the St. Albans Road's Roman Catholic church, which I call "Clam Temple" because of its shape. "42" is jokingly famous for some people: In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the number 42 is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, as the supercomputer Deep Thought calculated after 7.5 million years. Yesterday, at the café, Michael from Guǎngzhōu was wearing a black Louis Vuitton shirt with an orange-coloured blossom insignia thereon and grey jogging pants. I was wearing a hooded red, grey, and black cardigan over a military green mesh net vest over a red T-shirt, as well as a green touque, green striped Indian pyjama pants, and mauve garden clogs. We talked about lots of things, including that "socialism" might have a big comeback because of the effects of Artificial Intelligence and robotics in the future. These things could also affect warfare, we were thinking.
"Macau-Macau!" exclaimed Michael, the Guǎngzhōu Man, when we were thinking about Tagalog and the Philippines, as we were sitting at Lulu Island's Tim Hortons café, after 10:00, June 15, 2025. "Malaki?" I wondered if he was referring to the word for "big." I asserted: "'Lalaki' is for a man or boy, a male. 'Babae' is for a woman or girl, a female." It was déjà vu: I remembered that conversation with him from years ago. I was explaining that Tagalog words for gender alluded to size or stature. To Michael, the Philippines seems like a big Macau, the Portuguese ex-colony in the PRC, except that the Philippines is ex-Spanish. After we talked more about other subjects, Michael had to leave to pick up his kids at Sunday ESL class at posh Aberdeen Centre. At the café, Alex, my Filipino friend, reminded me about Mass times: Well before 15:00, I ventured walking in the blue-sky sunshine to the "Clam Temple," the Roman Catholic church on St. Albans Road. In the great worship hall, there were just a Filipina nun in her nun outfit and two women church co-workers at the front. I was sitting way back. Feeling the void was all that was necessary, except that one of the ladies started using a handheld vacuum cleaner to clean underneath the votive candle stands, where some candles were lit. I exited to the nice sunshine, as I sat on a bench. I'm Buddhoanimist as many Asians. The "Clam Temple" is a good ersatz for me. It was likely my 44th visit this year for me there. Ah, the void...

Nearly a decade on from its humiliation, Linfen is even trying to reinvent itself as a green city. A good illustration of this difference can be found by pulling statistics from a single prefecture level city and compare the gross domestic production per capita for two of the prefecture’s counties; in the publication 2010 Línfén tǒngjì niánjiàn (2010 临汾统计年鉴) the GDP per capita in Yonghe County is 5,632 RMB in 2009 while the GDP per capita in Gu County amounts to 47,933 RMB the same year. The two counties are only 188km apart, and yet the citizens under Gu County’s administration enjoy an income approximately 8.5 times higher than those under Yonghe County’s. One of the reasons for Gu County’s relative well developed economy may be its location approximately 51km from Linfen City, while the distance from Linfen City to Yonghe County roughly amounts to 165 km.
