From a- + *skile, of North Germanic origin, from Old Norse skjalgr (“askew, wry, oblique, squinting”), from Proto-Germanic *skelhaz (“squint-eyed, sloping”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (“to lean, bend; joint”). Cognate with Icelandic skjálgur (“squinting”), German scheel (“cross-eyed, leering, envious, jealous”), Dutch scheel (“cross-eyed, squinting”), Old English sceolh (“squinting, oblique, awry”).
