From auto- and gyro-, from latinized forms of Ancient Greek αὐτο- (auto-, “self-”) and γῦρος (gûros, “circle, gyre”), a variant of earlier Spanish autogiro, from the same roots, coined by Juan de la Cierva c. 1920.
