Etymology

Ultimately from Celtic *Durno-wāriā (Latin Durnovāria) + Old English ċeaster (“fort, Roman town”). The civil parish in New Brunswick and Ontario town are named in honour of colonial administrator Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester (1724 - 1808).
