Variant of Latin Mangi, q.v.
Borrowed from Hindi माँझी (māñjhī, “boatman, sailor”).
From a form of Punjabi ਮੰਜਾ (mañjā, “raised bed”). The Sikh sense is based on their use as seats of authority.
