Etymology

Ultimately from Ancient Greek Μόνοικος (Mónoikos), which is of unknown (possibly Ligurian) origin. The name was associated at an early date with Hercules, who had a temple here, and was said to mean “he who dwells alone”; see μόνος (mónos) and οἰκέω (oikéō).
