Definitions

Proper Noun
  1. 1
An ethnographic region of Lithuania, located in the north-west of the country.

Etymology

From Latin Samogetia, Samogitia (“Žemaitija”), from German Sameiten, Sameythen (“Žemaitija”), from Lithuanian Žemaitija (“lowland”). "g" was introduced to Latin and later German translations due to the usage of the letter "g" to denote "j" in Medieval writing. Sometimes connected with the (etymologically unrelated) name Getae, Ancient Greek Γέτης (Gétēs, “ancient Dacian tribe”).
