Autoreference

"Autoreference" in a Sentence (2 examples)

In order to keep the generic autoreferences, the plot was changed from the writing of a novel into the making of a film, the main character not being a writer-narrator, but a film director.

Whatever I may perceive or imagine, i.e. an external reference, must be reduced to autoreference. An eloquent example is Novalis's novel Heinrich von Ofterdingen (1800/1802). The text shows that the hero's way into a strange world is always simultaneously a way back to himself and to his self.
