Backrest

Dear passengers, we now ask you to place your luggage under the seat in front of you, lift the table and backrest upright, lower the armrest, fasten your safety belt and open the window shutters.

An office chair should be fitted with a backrest.

When I leant back, the backrest broke and I slid off the chair.

The backrest should conform to the natural curvature of your spine, and provide adequate lumbar support.

I can identify the pattern of wood grain on my chair at Mom and Dad's kitchen table, but I don't try to sketch it in my mind. For me, chairness is nonvisual; it's the feel of a seat connected to four legs and a backrest.
