Bidirectionally

The whole of the South Shields branch passed to the Tyne & Wear Metro in 1984 under the Tyneside Metropolitan Rail Act 1973, apart from a short section that was divided into two bi-directionally signalled lines (although interconnected by a series of loops that allow Metro trains to pass each other).
