Burrows

The mole burrows into the ground.

Body fossils are the physical remains of an actual organism (shells, bones, teeth, plant leaves, etc.), while trace fossils (burrows, coprolites, footprints, trackways, etc.) preserve evidence of an organism’s activity or behavior.

Trace fossils represent the presence or behavior of ancient life, without body parts being present. Footprints, worm burrows, and insect nests are examples of trace fossils.

But the invasive European green crab pushes native crabs out of their burrows. Under pressure from the invader, native crabs are eating less marsh grass. Marshes are recovering, and their carbon storage capacity is growing with them.

The sand lizard digs burrows for shelter, both for night-time refuge and for hibernation.

The bilby is a nocturnal marsupial and digs complex burrows to provide shelter from high summer temperatures and protection from predators.
