Choleraic

It will be vain to tell them that hireling attendance has been provided,—the life of the Choleraic depends upon the instant aid—the able bodied willing aid of affectionate friends, who will devote themselves to the task, and persevere indefatigably to the last.

Emaciation is therefore speedily developed, and may progress to an extreme degree; as [Étienne-Jules] Marey has tersely expressed it, choleraics even during life-time become cadavers (les cholériques le cadavérisent).

During an epidemic like cholera, all that is base and cowardly in men of this stamp comes out in all its ugliness. Hence we see choleraics abandoned in the street, numbers of the dead lying about on the main roads of the capital, hosts of moribund men and women hurried down in hired vehicles from villages into towns. This is done to prevent their dying without the city walls.
