NOAA scientists describe coral reefs as the "rainforests of the sea," noting that these fragile marine ecosystems provide important services such as coastal protection, commercial fish habitats and ecotourism, estimated to be worth as much as $375 billion globally each year. And if predictions are right, the coral reefs will survive, at least for another year, to share these benefits with the world around them.

Kayihura distinguishes between agri-tourism and ecotourism. He says the one is basically about agriculture and individual farmers, while the other is a community affair with benefits to the local population. Kayihura also says it protects and conserves resources. He says the prospects for the agri-tourism concept are good and that it's already doing well in other parts of Africa.

Driven by a search for the perfectly "grammable" shot, ecotourism is everywhere on the rise, though it rarely delivers on the promise of its name, which is to reconcile the impulse to consume nature with the desire to conserve it.
