"The Last Emperor," written by Mark Peploe "with" (as the credits say) Mr. Bertolucci, may have been inhibited by the enormousness of its subject, and even by the apparently enthusiastic support of China, which acted as host to Mr. Bertolucci, his cast and production crew.
