Flemishize

In Flanders, there has grown up a young literature, enthusiastic for the extirpation from Flemish soil of all that is in any way related to the French language; but, in spite of this revival of the Flemishizing spirit, the proportion of the languages is slowly changing in favor of the French: the Walloon provinces are more prolific, and the hundreds of thousands of Flemings who travel back and forth between France and Belgium learn more or less French in the great manufacturing cities of northern France.

It is almost a year ago (Temps, June 27, 1915,) that the German Governor General in Belgium, von Bissing, spread a report to the effect that on the request of some Flemings—no names mentioned, and for good reasons, indeed—he had declared himself willing immediately to Flemishize the Ghent University, on the sole condition of finding professors able to teach in Flemish.

According to the BELGA agency, the TDW proposes to "extract heavy payment for any Flemishizing action henceforth undertaken in Wallonia."
