Farmers are bearing the brunt of the devastation the feral pests leave behind. The pigs are drawn to the sweet taste of sugarcane, while their incessant foraging carves up cultivated land and uproots plants.

The hens range freely here, foraging the ground for extra nutrients. The eggs they lay have big orange yolks. “This suggests that most of the foraging that the bees do occurs very close to the hive,” study co-author Margarita López-Uribe, an associate professor of entomology at PSU, told CNN on Monday.
