Many people mistakenly say "Linux" when they're really referring to the GNU system with Linux as its kernel.

Use GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux is, in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.

This scenario would hark back to the post-apartheid era when South Africa operated under a GNU to oversee the new constitution, led by Mandela as president and FW de Klerk and Thabo Mbeki as deputy presidents, between April 1994 and February 1997.
