Non-technical

In university, in Canada, I learned two different kinds of English, technical English and non-technical English, from different courses. I learned that the passive voice, as in "The cat was chased by the dog," is unacceptable in non-technical style, but technical writers use it frequently and legitimately. I learned in technical English that one should use demonstrative pronouns like "this" and "that" with a substantive, not by themselves. There were a lot of nuts and bolts.

The book is written in simple, non-technical language that has the rare quality of being scientifically accurate yet intriguingly interesting.

It is therefore the more surprising that recent articles in the non-technical press have repeated some of these misleading statements and statistical comparisons.

So right away, even the simplest definition of capacity presents a non-technical trade off, between headway and journey time, not that that's much of a problem in practice.
