Tell a birder that you are trying to break a birdwatching record and their first question will be something like `Where do you plan to get Buff-breasted Button-quail?' Confide to a non-birder and they invariably ask, `How can you prove it?'

Travel to out-of-the-way places that many nonbirders find unappealing can be especially attractive to those who pack binoculars and field guides in their carry-on luggage.
