Quarries

The town of Kemmerer calls itself “Wyoming’s Aquarium in Stone.” Quarries just outside town yield schools of fossilized fish with just a few taps of a chisel.

The town could do more to promote fossil safaris out to the nearby quarries, where visitors can easily find their own fossils to take home.

A century ago, gypsum quarries sat here.

Those more difficult jobs, especially in the quarries, were carried out by criminals sentenced by the judges, or by prisoners of war.

They also theorized that the megalithic stones may have been transported 290 kilometers overland from the quarries in Wales to the prehistoric monument.
