This country, for example, has retained hold of the Pacific islands, established its dominance in Japan, occupied southern Korea, and maintained an important force of Marines in China. At the same time Russia has been incorporating the Kuriles and southern Sakhalin, re-acquiring rights it once possessed in Manchuria, and occupying north Korea.
