Sentimentality

We don't have time to indulge in sentimentality.

I was in the mood for sentimentality.

Some intellectuals venture to say that sci-fi films and literature are fuzzily impacts of Orientalism. For some Westerners, looking at a sci-fi film or reading a sci-fi book resembles an adventure into the Orient. For the Westerner, it is the Self versus the Other. James Alexander Brown wrote his dissertation "American Science Fiction Cinema, Orientalism, Self & Other" to expound on just that sentimentality in the West.

We as humans have compassion for such animals as rabbits. It would not be inconceivable that higher beings may have a similar sentimentality for us humans.

You know I'm not prone to sentimentality.

Things that were implicit and largely unjudged in the book, filtered through layers of stiff-upper-lip irony — Fanny’s self-pity, Linda’s obliviousness — are now foregrounded and, for the most part, rendered banal, with “Beaches”-level platitudes and sentimentality.
