Spacesuit

The Martian red desert stretched beyond and around me as I was wearing a spacesuit with oxygen tanks. The air outside was thinner, of course, than the Earth's. There was some breeze that would otherwise blow tumbleweeds on Earth's own deserts.

A spacesuit is much more than a set of clothes astronauts wear on spacewalks. A fully equipped spacesuit is really a one-person spacecraft.

The formal name for the spacesuit used on the International Space Station is the Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or EMU.

The spacesuit protects the astronaut from the dangers of being outside in space.

In Earth orbit, conditions can be as cold as minus 250 degrees Fahrenheit. In the sunlight, they can be as hot as 250 degrees. A spacesuit protects astronauts from those extreme temperatures.

What would happen if you were high above Earth’s surface or in space without a protective pressure suit or spacesuit? Would you explode? Would your blood boil? Could you survive?

During an EVA, the outer layer of an astronaut's spacesuit may be 120 degrees C for the side facing the Sun, and the part of that same suit facing away from the Sun could have an external temperature of -100 C.
