My sister studied to be a stenographer. She still uses shorthand sometimes when she takes notes.

The court stenographer made a mistake.

Tom is a stenographer.

Mary is a stenographer.

Rima is a stenographer.

Rima became a stenographer.

My impression is that the machine belonged to a stenographer once in the employ of my father, who used frequently to come to our house to take down dictations.
