Sumatra

Sumatra is an island.

The eruption blackened the skies over Sumatra Island.

Native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Mr. Stinky features umbrella-sized, ribbed leaves that are green on the outside and a vibrant, purplish-red on the inside.

Orangutans once thrived across Southeast Asia, but today they are found only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo. In the province of Kalimantan, there are an estimated 50,000 orangutans.

But scientists say the Toba supervolcanic eruption, which took place some 74,000-75,000 years ago in an area that is now home to Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia was one the largest known VEI 8 volcanic eruptions ever to take place on Earth.

In the Straits of Malacca one encounters a squall every night; there they are known by the name of Sumatras, crossing as they do from the island bearing that name.
