Ungated

The small yellow car stopped at the ungated level crossing.

This section is perfectly straight until the top of the rise is reached, where a 10 m.p.h. limit board gives warning of a sharp curve, and an ungated public road crossing, protected by cattle guards of the usual light railway pattern.

Tender engines cannot be used on this line because ungated level crossings inhibit crews from tender-first running and there is no turntable.

The number of ungated crossings protected by automatic flashing lights is about 300 and some 400 hand-operated crossings are equipped with red or yellow flashing warning lights.
