Police in northern China have arrested 27 people in their probe into tainted milk that has sickened 53,000 children and embarrassed China's reputation abroad, state media reported Tuesday.
The 27 are among 36 detained since law enforcers in Hebei province started investigating Sanlu Group, the company at the centre of the scandal, earlier this month.

According to figures published by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), Hebei's provincial capital of Shijiazhuang saw the highest average reading in all of China last year of particulate matter with a width of 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, which is easily inhaled into the lungs to cause respiratory damage.
Hebei's smog levels have an outsized effect on China's capital of Beijing since the province surrounds the city.
Also among China's ten worst performing cities were Hebei's cities of Handan and Tangshan, the world's biggest steel producing city, as well as Xingtai, Baoding and Hengshui.

More than 360 people have tested positive for coronavirus in an outbreak in Hebei province, south of Beijing. The National Health Commission reported yesterday that 69 new cases had been confirmed in 24 hours, including 46 in Hebei. Travel between Hebei and Beijing has been restricted, with workers having to show proof of employment to enter the capital.
