The condition, called pre-eclampsia, can be caught by monitoring the mother's blood pressure, but the method is not perfect. Researchers are working to develop a blood test that could be more accurate.

Pre-eclampsia can develop suddenly, usually in the second half of a woman's pregnancy. The condition can lead to a more serious disease called eclampsia that can cause convulsions in pregnant women and result in death of both the mother and child. Researchers at Harvard University and Beth Deaconess Hospital in Boston have identified a marker or substance in the blood that appears to increase the risk of pre-eclampsia in women.

More than a half-million women in developing countries die each year during childbirth. But a study shows an inexpensive drug could prevent a leading cause of those deaths. The conclusion is based on a study of 10,000 pregnant women. Up to eight percent of pregnant women around the world develop a condition called pre-eclampsia which is marked by high blood pressure and protein in the urine.
