I learned that the passive voice, as in "The cat was chased by the dog," is unacceptable in non-technical style, but technical writers use it frequently and legitimately. I learned in technical English that one should use demonstrative pronouns like "this" and "that" with a substantive, not by themselves. There were a lot of nuts and bolts.
